David Teniers III: a copper from 1677 in the Real Academia de San Fernando and another, possibly from the same series, in the Epiarte collection.

Recently, we have had news about the donation of a copper, signed and dated by David Teniers III in 1677, to the Real Academia de San Fernando. It is a painting depicting Christ among the Doctors, whose fake oval frame stands out, as well as the fact that it is following a composition by Veronese: https://www.academiacolecciones.com/pinturas/inventario.php?id=1559

Regarding the coppers by the son of David Teniers II and Ana Brueghel, there is also a singular piece belonging to the Epiarte collection (inv. nº 888). It is signed and dated in the same year as the painting in the Academia, with which it shares the type of support, a similar size and the trompe l'oeil frame. In this case, the painter goes back to the composition by Anton van Dyck for The Vision of the Blessed Hermann Joseph with Mary, which was made for the Antwerp Jesuit church and is currently preserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inv. nº 488): https://www.khm.at/en/objectdb/detail/647/?offset=13&lv=list

Teniers III proposes a novel iconography for the martyr Saint Valentine, identified by the palm and the sword of martyrdom appeared at his feet, by depicting him while receiving the rosary from the Virgin's hands.

The Influence of the Copy of Flemish Paintings in Spain during the 16th and 17th Centuries.

Brepols has just published the book Copies of Flemish Masters in the Hispanic World (1500-1700): 'Flandes' by Substitution, which has been edited by Eduardo Lamas Delgado and David García Cueto. In this book, Director of the Instituto Moll, Dr Ana Diéguez Rodríguez, together with other specialists, contributes to analyse, on the one hand, those reasons that drove the demand for copies of paintings by great Flemish masters by other painters of equal merit in later times and, on the other hand, who was involved in it, as well as the impact this practice had on the Spanish and Latin American art and society.
