The painting "The Penitent Saint Peter", attributed to Rubens and Van Dyck, has been "ejected" from Spain
A few days ago, on the occasion of the London Art Week, The Art Newspaper (
https://www.theartnewspaper.com/…/coming-out-four-re-discov…) highlighted
San Pedro Penitente (
The Penitent Saint Peter), the painting attributed to Anton van Dyck which was previously catalogued as a work by Peter Paul Rubens and which had belonged to the Spanish collecting since at least the 18th century. The authorship of this painting has immediately taken a second place since the most remarkable thing is the export, with the consent of the authorities in charge of the safety of the Spanish Cultural Heritage, of such a high-quality work of art in order to sell it in London. This attitude could be justified as a lack of awareness, but in 1971
Archivo Español de Arte, which is linked to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and is one of the most important journals focused on spreading the knowledge about the Spanish Heritage as well as on protecting it,published this painting as a work by Peter Paul Rubens.
Cultural Heritage is abundant in Spain, but if we don’t take care of what belongs to our history, to our identity, who will do it?
