A research project.

The Community of Madrid has approved within the R&D Program in Social Sciences and Humanities the research project: MADRID, SOCIETY AND HERITAGE: PAST AND CULTURAL TOURISM (H2019 / HUM-5898), presented by the Rey Juan Carlos University of Madrid, and with which the Instituto Moll. Centre for Research in Flemish Painting is part of this project, co-financed by the European Social Fund.

The main objective of this three-year project is to enhance the Madrid’s Cultural Heritage and its surroundings from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The concept of Heritage is subjective and it changes over time, being society which, in short, decides what assets must be preserved and protected based on the values it attributes to them. Hence the importance of achieving an awareness by society as an active part in the conservation, enjoyment and dissemination of Heritage. It is at this point where the education and dissemination of Heritage is essential to know the historical and social context in which it is forged and how it has reached our days.

This work will be carried out together with researchers from the Autonoma University of Madrid (UAM), the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the University of Alcalá de Henares (UAH)

International Museum Day.

Today, 18 May and the International Museum Day, the Instituto Moll wants to pay homage to these institutions and to the collections which have been preserved in them for centuries. To this purpose, we have chosen a painting from the Epiarte collection: the Cabinet of Curiosities by Frans Francken II. This painting summarises the origin of museums, libraries and archives. These Wunderkammers gathered from artistic objects made by humans: paintings, sculptures, books, etc (called artificialia) to everything that comes from nature (naturalia).

A photographic archive on line.

The Basque company Albayalde, which has been focused on the study, cultural affairs, conservation and restoration of cultural heritage over the course of the last 30 years, will share its photographic archive, which is covered by a Creative Commons license, allowing to download and use the images for free in studies and works. Many interesting photos will join those belonging to the Flemish altarpiece of Errenteria that you can already check.
