Dictionary of Little-known Artists

CLUES: Art History at KIK-IRPA is the research notebook or academic blog of the art historians working at the Documentation Department of the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels. The aim is to share their research and make it more accessible to the academic community and general public.

This expanding online resource uncovers the lives of lesser-known artists from the historic Low Countries and Belgium. It offers biographical entries and references for artists often missing from mainstream art history. Updated regularly, this ongoing dictionary invites researchers and art lovers alike to explore and contribute to the rediscovery of forgotten artistic legacies that help complete the broader picture of art history and our cultural past.

Philostrato. FECYT Seal of Quality

Philostrato. Journal of History and Art, which is edited by the Instituto Moll, has been awarded the FECYT Seal of Quality in its 2025 edition. 

This distinction recognises the rigour, quality and good scientific practices of both the editorial board and everyone who make this journal possible: from the reviewers to the authors.

Cultural Crossroads. Artistic Encounters between the Low Countries and Spain, 15th-17th Centuries. III- Echoes of Flemish Sculpture in Spain from Gothic to Baroque

The programme for the third study day dedicated to Flemish sculpture and its influence in Spain, organized by the Fondation Périer-D'Ieteren (Brussels) and the Instituto Moll (Madrid), is now available. The study day will be held at the aforementioned foundation in Brussels on November 28, 2025.

The study day is part of a research programme run by the Instituto Moll and the Fondation Périer-D’Ieteren. After focusing on painting (Brussels, 2023) and tapestry (Madrid, 2024), this third edition will turn the spotlight on sculpture.

A new book by our Associated Researcher Dr Oskar J. Rojewski

Dr Oskar J. Rojewski, Associated Researcher for the Instituto Moll, has just published a new book Painter to the Queen. Michel Sittow, Courtier to Isabella of Castile and the Habsburg Dynasty. Rojewski’s monograph explores Michel Sittow’s work and career at the court of Isabella of Castille and subsequently those of her Habsburg relatives, Philip the Fair, Margaret of Austria, and Charles V.
